Jiffy Bags – Brought to You By the Floppy Disk
Jul 25th, 2010 by James
In the world of packaging, the ubiquity of Jiffy brand products of all kinds is hard to dispute. There are so many options available that you are bound to find a mailer that fits and protects what you’re mailing.
The logo of Jiffy bags and mailing envelopes is a red oval with the word “Jiffy” in a serif font. The company has existed for decades. According to the website of Sealed Air Corp., around the time when floppy disks became popular for storing and sending data, padded mailing envelopes became needed. They acquired Jiffy Packaging Corp. in 1987, and created a new product that was a Jiffy mailing envelope lined with bubble wrap. Incidentally, bubble wrap was invented by the founders of Sealed Air Corp., Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding, around 1960.
For those looking to mail a product or a personal item, there are different kinds of Jiffy packages to choose from. They come cushioned (with bubble wrap) or not, in their standard kraft gold colour or white. There’s a line of rigid mailers for transporting books and the like. Extra lightweight envelopes are available, as well as the self-sealing kind. This is the option where there is a strip of glue covered with wax paper on the flap, and to seal it all that’s required is to peel the paper off to expose the glue. The flap, when closed, will adhere like a sticker, sealing the envelope. All of these options are available in various sizes and form factors.
So, where to buy Jiffy bags and mailers? The origin of Jiffy products proved difficult to trace. There are many companies that claim to manufacture Jiffy brand products, some from the UK and some from the US. For the UK, one company that came up frequently was Pregis Protective Packaging. PH Flexible Packaging appeared notably as well. In the US, Sealed Air came up as the originator of Jiffy.
Perhaps all manufacturers worldwide pay Sealed Air a license fee for the right to make and distribute Jiffy products. Perhaps certain companies have master licenses for their country, and so retailers that offer Jiffy must purchase the product in bulk from those companies. Or maybe all companies claiming to manufacture the Jiffy brand are actually distributors and have to order the product in massive quantities from Sealed Air Corp., the parent company of Jiffy. It is not clear at this time. Let us know by email with any information.
In any case, companies wishing to acquire Jiffy bags wholesale may order from local distributors. As for individuals, Jiffy can be found at office supply stores everywhere.
