Shopping Bags of the 21st Century: Advertising on the Go

When you’re ordering shopping bags for your business or event, your goal should be to leave attendees with a product that will last for a long time. After all, as long as bulk shopping bags exist, there is an ongoing advertisement for your company or event reaching an ever-widening audience. Choosing the right bag for the occasion will determine how far your reach stretches to potential new customers, employees or participants in recurring public events.
There are a few things to think about when choosing custom shopping bags. First, make sure you have an adequate budget to buy in bulk — especially if you need a couple thousand bags. Often, buying in lesser quantities is far more costly. Never worry about having too many (unless the scenario is about 2,000 bags for an event expecting only 200 participants). It is better to have more than you need than it is not to have enough. Leftover bags can still be used for other purposes.
Plastic bags have been a staple of the conference and trade event industry for some time. They come in many different colors, are an easy surface for reproducing a logo and are less expensive to buy in large volume. They can have a glossy or matte finish and often come with drawstrings. Though plastic typically has a shorter lifespan than many other types of bags, they are durable and convenient enough to withstand light wear. Often, they are reusable for a few more times beyond their original purpose.
There has been much environmental concern about plastics. They are made from petrochemicals, which are a finite and polluting resource. Plastic waste also lingers in the environment for hundreds of years, as the quality that makes plastic good to use — its durability and resistance to decay — also makes it a burden to the environment. However, recent analysis of the environmental harms caused by plastic bags has revealed paper bags NOT to be a great choice either. Paper bags can take more water to produce and more energy to manufacture. They also contribute to the destruction of forests because of the trees needed to make paper. Their saving grace is that in the end, all that energy taken to produce them is given back to the environment when they decay and break down.
Cellophane bags, mesh bags, and organza bags are all more delicate and typically used for holding smaller, lightweight objects. Some typically come with a cloth drawstring and keep things like marbles and stones or small trinkets from scattering. These bags are not made for heavy stuffing, though.
Canvas totes or canvas shopping bags are probably the most durable of all shopping bags and offer the most options for reuse and custom design. Cloth bags, which can also be made of hemp, jute, burlap, and cotton, can be embroidered or designed with a silk screen print for a distinct logo. Grocery bags are now even thermal insulated to preserve cold foods or prevent damp foods from leaking through the canvas.
Prices for bulk shopping bags can range from about 59 cents each up to about 5 dollars apiece. Of course, there are bags that cost more, but the price will depend on the retailer and the type of bag you buy, as well as the customization options you select. Most providers require a minimum of 200 to 500 bags in order to customize, and most merchants who sell them can be found online or at local sports or craft shops. Look for online vendors who offer free shipping and have a solid return policy if something is wrong with the order.
The best shopping bags offer the chance to give your customers or event attendees something useful while helping businesses convey an important business message. They should be chosen with care. After all, shopping bags are the 21st century portable commercial on a bag!
